How to Know Yourself-32: Finding Happiness Beyond Your Past

Can You Be Happy Despite the Past?

How much do the negative experiences from your past affect your current happiness?
And perhaps more importantly—can you build a sense of happiness that’s independent of those past hardships?

One of the brain’s most defining characteristics is its tendency to take the easy way out. While this instinct was once vital for survival, today it often holds us back. It can cause us to miss opportunities, let problems grow, and eventually become overwhelmed by stress, anxiety, anger, guilt, and regret.

As a result, our relationships may suffer, we may miss out on chances for personal growth, and worst of all—we can get stuck in the past.

But facing our past and moving forward with new experiences helps us do the opposite. It helps us respond more rationally to future challenges, find solutions more easily, and turn hardships into valuable lessons.

Understanding that negative experiences are a part of life is crucial. What follows is learning to become more aware of how we react to them, to truly leave the past behind, and to focus on the present moment. If this feels incredibly difficult or takes a lot of effort, seeking professional support can be genuinely helpful.

It’s true—building a happy life, regardless of what you’ve been through, is easier said than done. That, too, is something we must accept. Like anything meaningful, healing from the past and creating a beautiful present takes time, patience, and above all, a willingness to change.

For me, the simplest way to achieve this has been to make time for myself and engage in activities that make me feel good. Things like physical exercise, travel, spending time with loved ones, or meditation are some of the most basic but powerful tools I can recommend.

Every breath you take could be your last—and you can’t get back the ones that have already passed. Just as you can’t pre-order your next breath. When you’re kissing someone, making love, or holding hands, you’re deeply in the present. The past and the future vanish. You’re simply living the moment. And once you truly realize this, you’ll understand what it means to live in the now.

Remember: happiness is not a destination—it’s a process.
